Writing by Typing is an online writing tutoring program for grades 1–12 and college essays, run by Higher Level Learning, a San Francisco nonprofit. Our 1-on-1 teachers strengthen students’ grammar and vocabulary to develop better writers. Each week, your child meets by video with a personal writing tutor and learns to write clearly and concisely.
Teachers and students collaborate on a live document so your child gets instruction and feedback as they learn how to organize and expand upon their ideas.
Your child will learn how to use tools and techniques to help them develop their writing so they can become independent, confident writers who have fun writing.

In every live 1-on-1 session, your child’s tutor sees and works with them in a shared word processor that holds both our curriculum and your child’s work.
Technology Requirements
Students need a computer or a tablet with a keyboard, plus headphones with a microphone. They improve their typing skills as they work, and the headphones help them stay focused during sessions.
Strengthen Writing Fundamentals
Developing a strong grammar foundation is fundamental to make writing easier for students. We assess your child to determine their needs so we can develop a customized curriculum to reinforce or challenge their writing skills.
Frustrated, resistant child?
Students who resist writing often need to relearn the fundamentals: vocabulary, sentence building, paragraph organization and more.
Can’t organize an essay?
Our curriculum is designed to teach students how to work on the individual components needed to write a cohesive essay. We also teach students to brainstorm and organize their ideas so they can express them clearly in their writing.
Not understanding teacher expectations?
Our curriculum follows state grade-level standards, so your child and their writing tutor work on exactly the components teachers expect to see.
Who Are We
We are educators who want to help students love to write. Over years of working in schools, we’ve heard parents’ frustration with trying to help their children write better, and in classes of more than 25 students, it’s hard to personalize instruction for every child.
We started Writing by Typing to make writing easier, and more fun, for every student.

Who are the tutors?
Every Writing by Typing tutor is a US credentialed classroom teacher who knows grade-level writing standards and what classroom teachers expect.
What grades do you work with?
We tutor students in grades 1–5, 6–8 and 9–12, and we help high school seniors with college application essays.
How does an online writing session work?
Your child meets their tutor by live video. They write together in a shared live document, so the tutor can give feedback while your child is writing instead of after the work is graded.
What does my child need?
A computer, or a tablet with a keyboard, and headphones with a microphone.
How much does tutoring cost?
Monthly plans start at $349 for four 50-minute sessions for grades 1–5. Plans for older grades, college essays and longer sessions are listed in our pricing section.
How will I know my child is improving?
At the end of every session your child prints or sends you the work they completed, so you can see their progress week by week.
Can I cancel?
Yes. Monthly plans can be cancelled by the 21st of the month to stop the following month’s charge. Unused tuition is refundable subject to our refund terms, including an 8% processing fee.
